What a birth chart actually is

A birth chart is a map of the sky for one moment and one place. It records where the Sun, Moon and planets stood along the ecliptic, which degree of the zodiac was rising on the eastern horizon, and the angles those points make to one another.

Three things are read first. The Sun sign is the one most people already know. The Moon sign is read as the inner, private register — what you need rather than what you show. The rising sign, or ascendant, is the degree climbing over the horizon at your first breath, and it sets the whole house framework of the chart.

Why the time matters more than the date

The rising point travels through the entire zodiac every twenty-four hours, but its speed across the ecliptic varies by sign and latitude. An hour of error can move the ascendant far enough to change its sign and shifts every house cusp with it. The Sun and slower planets move much less during one day.

That asymmetry is why this calculator asks whether you know your time, and why it withholds the houses when you do not. A guessed ascendant reads exactly like a known one, and it would be wrong.

Where these numbers come from

Everything is computed on this site. The Sun and Moon follow the standard Meeus series, the planets follow JPL orbital elements, and the houses are solved by the Placidus semi-arc method. Your birth place supplies coordinates and the historical time zone rules that were actually in force on your birthday — including summer time arrangements that no longer exist.

Nothing about your birth moment leaves the site. The date, the time and the coordinates are used to draw the chart and are not stored on a public page, sent to a third-party ephemeris, or written into the address bar.

Reading the wheel

The outer band holds the twelve signs. Inside it the numbered spokes are the houses, the twelve areas of life, counted counterclockwise from the ascendant on the left. The glyphs are the planets, placed at their exact degree. The lines drawn across the center are the aspects: gold for the flowing ones, rose for the ones that ask for work.
