The ascendant and rising sign are the same thing: the exact ecliptic degree meeting the eastern horizon at a particular minute and location.
01 / Meaning
Astrologers read the rising sign as your manner of arrival: the pace, tone, and first impression other people encounter. It is also the cusp of the first house, so it sets the orientation of all twelve houses in a natal chart.
That makes it different from your sun sign. The Sun describes core direction; the ascendant describes the frame through which that direction becomes visible.
The zodiac completes a full turn across the horizon in about twenty-four hours. Rising speed is not uniform: latitude and the angle of the ecliptic make some signs rise faster than others. Exact coordinates and local time are therefore essential.
A result such as “Libra rising” names a thirty-degree band. The exact ascendant degree locates you inside it and shows how close the recorded birth time sits to either neighboring sign.
